Why a Commercial Ice Machine Stops Making Ice

Ice is everyday in summer drinks—bubble-tea shops depend heavily on ice machines. Age and poor maintenance can stop ice production. What causes it? CHINENG explains below.

Common reasons an ice machine makes no ice

1. Runs but no ice: low/no water in the pan; gear reducer or motor faults; ice or dirt blockage.

2. Lower output: capillary/expansion-valve blockage; moisture ice plug; condenser restriction; low refrigerant or leak; dirty evaporator.

3. Compressor cycles off: low voltage; bad contactor; pressure protection; starter fault; dirty condenser high-pressure trip.

4. Leaks: inlet valve overfills; damaged hose; clamp failure; float valve fault.

5. Soft wet ice: high ambient heat; overcharged refrigerant after service; excess water feed; weak compressor.

6. Loud noise: fan, reducer, or compressor noise.

7. System fault on start: phase sequence, power supply, or control-board faults.

8. Water shortage alarm: clogged inlet strainer/hose/valve; leaking drain valve; pump failure.

9. Compressor runs, no ice: refrigerant leak or solenoid stuck open.

10. No water lift: failed pump cannot feed the ice plate.

11. Poor heat rejection: longer cycles or no ice; hot compressor trips on overheat protection.

Cooling modes

1. Water-cooled: performance follows water temperature—cooler water lowers condensing temperature and keeps summer output steadier.

2. Air-cooled: performance follows ambient temperature. Sites above about 42°C are generally unsuitable for air-cooled units.

The refrigeration cycle lifts refrigerant from low to high pressure to reject heat. Continuous compressor cooling is required for efficiency.
