How to Deal with Ice Buildup in a Refrigerated Display Case

Long-running refrigerated display cases often grow thick frost because humid air meets very cold evaporator surfaces. That is normal—so how do you clear ice? CHINENG explains.

Defrosting

1. Set temperature compensation to 0° (or simply switch off if there is none) and unplug.

2. Remove food and drawers; let frost melt naturally; wipe dry and restore stock.

3. Tip: cut a thicker plastic film to size and stick it on the frosted wall for easier peel-off.

4. After frost is gone, clean interiors with soft cloth and mild detergent; a temporary higher thermostat setting for 2–3 hours can speed melt, then return to a moderate summer setting to save power.

Cooling types: air-cooled units are often frost-free with auto-defrost—recommended for convenience and hygiene.

Care tips

1. Keep drain ports clear with a soft plastic probe.

2. Confirm doors seal fully after closing.

3. Wrap high-moisture foods.

4. Leave gaps; keep food off the rear liner.

5. Unplug before cleaning; wipe with detergent then dry; for storage, dry fully after cleaning.

Ice is normal—defrost in order, then maintain the cabinet.
